This weekend I got eyelash extensions at Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar for the very first time. During my session with Jenn I picked her brain and found out some very helpful information about getting lash extensions done. From upkeep, getting them refilled, what to look for in selecting a lash artist, and more. With over 10 years of experience in the beauty industry, Jenn was extremely helpful. I will also include some information about Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar itself (HELLO $$$ DISCOUNTS! See below!)
Who should get lashes?
Lash extensions are LIFESAVERS. They save me so much more time in the mornings (no more mascara- HALLELUJAH)! They don’t require much upkeep and they are perfect for mothers who want to shed a few min off of their morning routines, college students that want to look good with little effort, those that have bad eyesight and don’t want to try and aim that mascara brush around their eyes anymore, and pretty much anyone else. No matter the length of your natural lashes, you can benefit from adding flirty, beautiful lash extensions.
What should I look for in a lash artist?
- First and foremost your lash artist should definitely hold a cosmetologist license. In many states this is a requirement for even practicing at all.
- Search their social media sites- a well-established lash artist will have plenty of photos of their work (if they produce quality work!)
- Check out their work through Google searches. Make sure their lashes fit what you’re looking for. You want a lash artist that is versed in a wide range of lash styles. Yelp is another great site for searching for quality artists.
- Do they work in a clean salon? This is very important. You want to be sure to select a salon that takes precautionary measures to keep their salon, as well as all the tools used, clean and organized.
- Is the artist willing to work with you? I say this because you want to select an artist that is understanding and will work with you easily to achieve the look you are going for.
How long do lashes typically last?
This is dependent upon how well you care for your lashes. If you take good care of them they should last around 3-4 weeks before going to get a refill. The more often you go to get them refilled, the better they will look. Your natural eyelashes shed daily, which will cause the extension to shed as well. So depending upon your body’s growth cycle, you will find out after the first round how often you should be getting them refilled. It is also important to mention that salons will often give discounted prices if you get them refilled sooner rather than later.
How long does the process take?
If it is your first time getting extensions, the process will take a bit longer than those just getting a refill. The first time will take between 1.5- 2 hrs if the artist is methodical and careful with what they are doing. You don’t want someone that is rushing through appointments and overbooking their schedules. Refills will be quicker and should last around 1 hr or so.
How much does it cost?
Getting eyelash extensions will cost between $150-$400 depending on where you go. Typically the first set is most expensive whereas the fills are much cheaper. There are also many different kinds of lashes to choose from so depending on how much length/volume you want, you will pay differing amounts.
What kind of lashes did you get?
Because I was looking for a more natural, everyday look, I went with the ‘classic’ lashes. These are your more wispy, airy lashes. Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar also offers a volume set. The volume set is going to be much more dramatic and noticeable. These would be perfect for weddings, prom, and other events that you want a little more glam for! The classic look is perfect for everyday glam. Always get lashes that you know your natural lashes can handle. Your artist should encourage you to choose what is right for your eyes.
How do you care for your lashes?
Do’s:
- Use a spoolie wand to brush your lashes daily. This helps to keep them in place and defined.
- When removing makeup around the eyes, gently rub the area (don’t scrub!) to avoid putting too much pressure on the lashes. Make sure you are using a gentle cleanser that is not oil-based.
- Avoid waterproof eye make-up. This is because it usually takes a strong oil-based product to remove the waterproof product, so its best to opt for non waterproof.
- Sleep on your back as much as possible. I’m not good at this one, but if you can, sleeping on your back helps you to avoid rubbing your eyes on your pillows which can weaken the glue.
Dont’s:
- Don’t touch or play with your lashes. The oils in your fingers can be damaging to the extensions.
- Try not to use mascara with your lashes. Placing products on your lashes will significantly reduce the wear- time.
- Don’t try and remove the lashes yourself. Artists can help you do this with special products that prevent damage to your natural lashes.
Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar
I chose Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar in San Antonio, TX for my eyelash extensions. Jenn Q. was my lash artist and she did an amazing job. Being that it was my first time getting lashes, I was extremely nervous and did not know what to expect. Jenn walked me through the process, helped me decide what lashes would work best for the look I was trying to go for, and methodically took her time to create a set of lashes that I could only dream of! Lash Out Loud Beauty Bar is located inside of the Phoenix Salon at the corner of Blanco and 1604 (for all you San Antonio girls). I HIGHLY recommend going to see Jenn for your eyelash needs. She also provides services such as highlights, haircuts, eyebrow and upper lip waxing, threading, blowouts, and more.
